ABOUT

July 15, 2014, the European Commission published a Green Paper entitled “Maximising the European knowhow: possible extension of the protection of geographical indications of the European Union to non-agricultural products”

A Geographical Indicator (GI) is a sign, usually a name, used on goods that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities, characteristics or a reputation essentially attributable to that place of origin, and as such can be protected from misuse or representation from other parts of the world.

As a group of independent manufacturers and retailers of Whitby Jet, The Whitby Jet Manufacturers Association (WJMA) are currently involved in research to gain EU protection for this world class British gemstone. In addition, the association was formed to provide assurance and confidence for those visiting the town that they are purchasing authentic Whitby Jet, across their approved jewellery retailers and manufacturers.

In providing protection for Whitby Jet and its GI, it will highlight and secure the specific qualities of the Jet material sourced from the small area of the north east coastline. It will also provide assurance as to specific manufacturing skills and traditions which, if they are to be kept alive, need protection from the increasingly inferior craftsmanship and materials.

Our Mission

"To protect the source and manufacturing of original Whitby Jet, whilst furthering the knowledge, study, interest and appreciation for a unique British gemstone both at home and worldwide."
